Getting from Milan’s airports to the city centre
Milan is served by three airports. <strong>Linate</strong> (LIN) is the closest to the centre and is now connected directly by the <strong>M4 metro (blue line)</strong> — the big change of recent years. <strong>Malpensa</strong> (MXP) is the furthest out and the main intercontinental hub, reached by the <strong>Malpensa Express</strong> train or by coach. <strong>Bergamo Orio al Serio</strong> (BGY) is the low-cost hub and is reached by coach. Note: the metro reaches only Linate — there is no metro line to Malpensa or Bergamo.

Connecting to the metro
- → Cadorna (M1 · M2) — Malpensa Express terminus in the centre; interchange with the red and green lines.
- → Milano Centrale (M2 · M3) — Arrival point for coaches from Malpensa and Bergamo and for some Malpensa Express trains; interchange with the green and yellow lines.
- → San Babila (M1 · M4) — Interchange between the M4 from Linate and the M1 (red) towards the Duomo.
- → Milano Porta Garibaldi (M2 · M5) — Stop for some Malpensa Express trains; interchange with the green and lilac lines.
Frequently asked questions
Does the metro go to Malpensa?
No. No metro line reaches Malpensa. The rail link is the Malpensa Express train, which reaches Milano Cadorna (M1/M2) in about 37 minutes and Milano Centrale (M2/M3) in about 52 minutes, for 13 € one way.
Is Linate on the metro?
Yes. Since 2024 the M4 (blue line) runs directly inside Linate airport and reaches San Babila in about 12 minutes, where you change to M1 (red) for the Duomo. The normal 2.20 € urban ticket is enough.
What is the cheapest way from Bergamo Orio al Serio?
The coach to Milano Centrale (Orioshuttle, Terravision, FlixBus, Autostradale): usually about 8-10 € per trip, or from about 5 € if you book online in advance, with departures every 20-30 minutes and a journey of about an hour depending on traffic.
Malpensa Express or coach for Malpensa: which is better?
The train (13 €) is more reliable because it is unaffected by traffic: about 37 minutes to Cadorna. The coach can cost a few euros less (from about 5 € online) but takes 50-70 minutes depending on traffic. If you are short on time or travelling at peak hours, the train is better.
How do you buy public transport tickets in Milan in 2026?
From 2026 ATM paper tickets are no longer sold: you travel by tapping a contactless card or phone at the gates, or with a RicaricaMi card or digital tickets on the ATM app. The Malpensa Express ticket, however, is bought separately on the Trenord/Malpensa Express app or website.
