How the ATM fare works

In the Mi1–Mi3 urban area (Milan city and the surrounding municipalities), the metro has a flat fare: each trip costs €2.20 with an urban ticket, regardless of distance. The ticket is valid for 90 minutes and includes one metro ride plus unlimited transfers on buses and trams within that time frame. With contactless payment (CleSS — card, smartphone, or smartwatch), you pay €2.20 per trip by tapping upon entry and exit, and the total charge for that device never exceeds €7.60 per day. For municipalities outside the city, the fare is zone-based according to the STIBM integrated system (Mi1…Mi9), with a small surcharge for each additional zone.

Where to Buy and How to Pay

Contactless Cards and Smartphones
Hold a Visa, Mastercard, Amex, or Maestro card—or Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay (CleSS system)—near the turnstiles. Tap when entering and exiting; the fare is the same as a city ticket, and you don’t need to buy anything.
ATM App
Purchase city tickets and tourist passes directly from the official ATM app and show the QR code at the turnstiles.
Tobacco Shops and Vending Machines
Buy tickets at tobacco shops, newsstands with the ATM logo, and at vending machines in metro stations.
RicaricaMi Card
The rechargeable electronic card on which you can load passes and tickets (one-time issuance). Starting in 2026, it will replace disposable paper tickets.
