Sesto 1° Maggio FS — overview
The northern end of the red line, Sesto 1° Maggio FS is where the metro meets Sesto San Giovanni, the factory town that housed Falck, Breda and Marelli for the better part of a century. Step out here and you are no longer in Milan proper: this is the neighbouring municipality, and the station works as a hinge between the city network and the northern belt. The M1 runs from here to the Duomo in a little over half an hour with no changes, which makes it a practical — and far cheaper — base for visitors who would rather sleep outside the centre.

This is Sesto San Giovanni, on the site of the former Falck steelworks — now a vast urban regeneration project that will house the Città della Salute e della Ricerca research hospital. Around the station are the park-and-ride and the bus terminals for Brianza.
