How often do trains run?
Schedules by Line
Night buses and special services
Every night, after the subway closes
When the subway is closed (approximately 12:30 a.m.–5:30 a.m.), the NM1, NM2, NM3, and NM4 night bus replacement lines go into service, following the same routes as the subway lines. On weekends, ATM adds additional night buses and the on-demand Radiobus service.
Driverless
The M4 and M5 lines are fully automated, with platform doors and trains running as frequently as every ~90 seconds during peak hours. There’s no need to check a schedule—just hop on as soon as the train arrives.
Reduced Hours
On certain holidays (such as December 25 and May 1), the metro operates on a reduced schedule, typically from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM. Always check official announcements ATM before traveling.
Buses Instead of the Metro
During certain periods, sections of the line may be closed for maintenance and replaced by shuttle buses. Service interruptions are announced in advance at stations and on the ATM app.

Practical Tips
- Check before you go: use the ATM app for real-time schedules, alerts, and service status, and bookmark this site.
- M4/M5 automated lines: There’s no schedule to check—trains run every few minutes, and you can board as soon as they arrive.
- Avoid the crowds: The busiest times are around 7:30–9:30 a.m. and 5:00–7:30 p.m. on weekdays, both heading into and out of the city center.
- M1 and M2 branches: The M1 splits at Pagano (Bisceglie / Rho Fiera), and the M2 splits at Cascina Gobba (Gessate / Cologno Nord) and at Famagosta (Abbiategrasso / Assago): always check the destination on the train and on the monitors.
- Always validate your ticket: stamp your ticket or tap your contactless card on the turnstiles at the start of your trip to ensure you’re traveling in compliance with the rules.
