Santa Sofia sits on the Cerchia dei Navigli, the ring of streets following the line of Milan's old inner canal, covered over in the 1930s. The area lies between corso Italia and via Santa Sofia, a few minutes from the Duomo and the State University. The station opened on 12 October 2024, when the whole M4 route entered service.
