The name is misleading: Porto di Mare has nothing to do with the sea. It recalls the never-built plan for a river port that was to link Milan to the Adriatic via the Po. The station opened on 12 May 1991 with the M3's southern extension and serves an edge-of-city area between the Corvetto district and the Parco Agricolo Sud, with Parco Cassinis nearby.
